Is it Deprecated or Depreciated?
7/8/2026
Gotta nitpick for a minute; when talking about software, we generally mean deprecate and NOT depreciate. To depreciate means that the subject has decreased in its value, while to deprecate something means to recommend against its use or to effectively retire it.
It is admittedly a bit pedantic of me, but they are entirely different words.
I made a table to help:
| Example | Deprecated | Depreciated |
|---|---|---|
| “Stop using this code in my software” | ✓ |
✗ |
| “My car is not worth what it once was” | ✗ |
✓ |
| “Trick: this software’s retail value has gone down” | ✗ |
✓ |
In case you are wondering:
Why is this jerk writing such a pretentious article?
Well, I am fairly non-confrontational, so I figure if I put it here, I can at least get it off my chest without ever correcting anyone…just cannot bring myself to do it.
